Psychosis

A mental health symptom that distorts perception, causing hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking. Often linked to schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, it requires prompt intervention for effective treatment and recovery.

Treatment for psychosis at Lifeskills

At Lifeskills, we provide individualized treatment for psychosis through a multidisciplinary approach that combines evidence-based therapies, medication management, and psychoeducation. We utilize our cognitive remediation therapy pathway to address cognitive deficits, including difficulties with attention, memory, processing speed, and social skills. The CRT pathway incorporates BrainHQ, a computer-based cognitive rehabilitation program that improves cognitive function through brain games and interpersonal skills groups. Our experienced clinicians work closely with each client to develop a personalized plan that helps manage symptoms, reduce cognitive decline, and support long-term recovery.

About Psychosis

Psychosis is a symptom of severe mental health conditions that affect an individual’s perception of reality. Symptoms include hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking, which disrupt daily functioning. Approximately 3% of people will experience psychosis at some point in their lives. Often linked to conditions like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, psychosis can also occur independently.

Questions about psychosis

What is psychosis?

Psychosis is a symptom of various mental health disorders, though it can also occur independently. It involves a disconnection from reality, manifesting as hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking. Commonly linked to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and severe depression, psychosis can also result from substance use, trauma, or brain injury. Untreated, it severely disrupts daily functioning and requires immediate intervention for proper diagnosis and treatment.

What are the signs and symptoms of psychosis?

A significant disruption in reality perception marks psychosis. Symptoms typically include hallucinations, where individuals experience sensations (sight, sound, or touch) that are not present, and delusions, which are false beliefs that persist despite evidence to the contrary. Disorganized thinking leads to incoherent speech or difficulty logically connecting thoughts.

Additionally, individuals may display disorganized or abnormal motor behavior, ranging from agitation to catatonia. Cognitive deficits, such as impaired attention, memory, and decision-making, are also common. Psychosis can present in various mental health conditions or occur independently, often impacting daily functioning and interpersonal relationships.

When should I seek help for psychosis?

If you or a loved one is experiencing signs of psychosis — such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, or difficulty functioning in daily life — it’s essential to seek professional help immediately. Early intervention can help prevent symptoms from worsening and support better outcomes. Psychosis can be overwhelming, both for the person experiencing it and their loved ones, but effective treatment can restore stability.

At Lifeskills, we offer compassionate, specialized care to address the unique needs of those experiencing psychosis. Reach out today to learn how we can help you or your loved one achieve lasting recovery.
